Hello Hello!
Welcome back to another rendition of the Resource Roundup. This month, we’re shaking things up a little.
If you can’t tell, I’m still refining this portion of the newsletter so if you have any thoughts or suggestions please reach out and let me know.
In September, we looked at Self-Compassion, Core Values and Mercy- topics so expansive they could fill entire books. Since that’s not possible here, I try to break down each of these larger topics into something a little more manageable. Something you can read with your morning cup of coffee and not feel totally overwhelmed by.
While exploring these topics, I often come across valuable resources that don’t quite make it into the week’s edition. This section is dedicated to sharing those gems with you.
Listed below are some additional resources that I’ve found insightful and I think you might enjoy as well. With that, let’s dive in.
Self-Compassion:
Exercise: Supportive touch
One of the quickest and easiest ways to practice self-compassion in stressful moments is through supportive touch. By placing a hand over our heart, cupping our own cheek, or giving ourselves a hug, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system which helps our body calm down. For more on this, look here.
Worksheet: Self Compassion in Daily Life
One of the toughest challenges in practicing self-compassion is finding a way to care for yourself in the moment. When you’re tired, stressed, and agitated, “speaking kindly to yourself” doesn’t always seem to cut it. What do you do then? The Center for Mindful-Self-Compassion has tons of resources but this worksheet is one of my favorites.
Podcast: The Humanity of Jesus
When it comes to cultivating greater self-compassion, one of the most helpful things we can do is remember our humanity and the humanity of Jesus. We’re not supposed to have it all figured out - being human means constantly learning. And since Jesus experienced life on earth, He fully understands what we’re going through. This podcast was a game changer for me.
Core Values:
Quiz: The Conscious Values Index Assessment (CVI)
I have taken my fair share of personality quizzes but the CVI Quiz stands out. It helps us understand our motivational drivers and why we seem to thrive in certain situations and not others. It only takes 10 minutes and it makes you think. Bonus, take this short Core Values Quiz to help figure out your top 5.
Worksheet and Podcast: Brene Brown - Living Into Your Core Values
Is it really a Resource Roundup if I don’t mention Brene Brown? This podcast and this worksheet are some of the most helpful resources out there when it comes to our core values. It’s one thing to know them, it’s another thing to live into them. Spend some time with these resources to find out how.
Video: Aligning Values Ted Talk
What do you do when two of your core values come into conflict with one another? Which one wins out? I have been asking myself this question for awhile now and this Ted Talk sheds some light on it.
Mercy:
Book: No Longer Strangers by Eugene Cho and Samira Izadi Page
No Longer Strangers is a thought-provoking and timely book that asks how we can love our immigrant and refugee neighbors, without alienating them through cultural misunderstandings. Featuring insights from immigrants, pastors, and theologians, it offers practical, compassionate guidance on how to care for those around us. I haven’t finished it yet, but I’ve loved what I’ve read so far.
The Art of Neighboring
A few years ago, a group of churches in Colorado united to start a neighboring movement in their community. They invited their congregations to actually get to know their physical neighbors and it took off. Today, you can read their book, access free resources, explore their sermon series, or watch this video. They have some great tools and insights worth checking out.
Book: The Road to Daybreak by Henri J.M. Nouwen
The Road to Daybreak is one of my all-time favorite books. In it, Nouwen chronicles his journey of leaving a prestigious academic life to serve people with disabilities in the L'Arche community. Through this transition, he discovers deep insights about God, humility, and loving the vulnerable. A 10/10 read.
Spend some time with these resources and let me know which one resonates with you the most.
